Austin's Ad-libs

Filed under things I never thought I would say:

"No, honey, you have to finish your oatmeal and Cheetos before you can have a doggie cookie."

Austin's Ad-libs

I caught Austin in the process of unrolling the paper towels on the kitchen island.  I got down at eye level with him to tell him "no" and "don't touch."  He examined me with this little smirk on his face and a gleam in his eye like he was trying to decide what would throw me off me game.

He decided to try distraction, stared at me one last second, and said, "OINK!"

Game over.

Austin's Ad-libs

We were visiting a daycare while they were serving lunch.  Chicken nuggets and corn.  Austin said he wanted some corn, and they gave him some with a chicken nugget.  I said he wouldn't eat the nugget since he doesn't usually eat meat.  Of course, I refuse to give him chicken nuggets.  As he put the first bite into his mouth, I held out my hand to take it once he spit it out.  Instead, his face broke out into a big smile, and he exclaimed, "I LOVE it!"

Dallas was eating strawberries with cool whip.  Austin, of course, wanted "some."  As Dallas offered him the first bite, he tentatively tasted some of the cool whip.  His face lighted up as he excitedly said, "ice cream!"

I think I'm fighting a losing battle...

My first week at Pineview Mother's Morning Out, we learned about transportation.  Finger painting is my new favorite thing to do!

Austin's Ad-libs

When I went in to get Austin out of bed this morning, I had my hair pulled back into a ponytail.  He looked at me and said, "Mommy haircut."

Crib Notes: 20 mos

Hi Family and Friends.  At 20 mos, Austin is much, much too busy to send out regular updates, but he asked me to give you a rundown of his many impressive skills these days.

Austin is running everywhere.  He is learning to jump.  He has nearly everything going for him.  He bends at the knees and propels himself up.  He even makes sure to say "jump."  The only thing missing is his feet leaving the floor.  Occasionally, he even lifts one leg as he says "jump."  If it weren't for that one foot firmly planted on the ground, he would be jumping like a little frog.

Austin knows his shapes - circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle, star, heart - and he knows his colors better than you and me.  His favorite color still seems to be purple, and oval is by far his favorite shape.  He sees them everywhere.  He can also count up to 5, but he sometimes slips a 7, 8, 9 10 after 1,2.

Austin talks at least at a 3 year old level.  He knows upwards of 250 words and can repeat almost anything.  He regularly makes 3 word sentences, and it is not uncommon for him to use 4 word sentences.  "Daddy gave horse carrot" is a sentence we hear a lot around here.  To put that in perspective, the doctor will want him to know around 50 words at his 24 mo check up.   He is not expected to start making 2 or 3 word sentences until after his second birthday.  This morning he was saying that the pear was "licious" and "juicy."  One of my very favorite phrases that he has learned to say is "mommy's gorgeous."

He knows lots of songs, and it is often pretty easy to figure out what he is singing.  He loves Jingle Bells (thanks to a book from YaYa), and he will sing "happy day...to YOU" while playing with his balloons.

He has become quite opinionated of late.  When he doesn't get his way, he whines and stomps his little feet.  He generally gets over it pretty quickly, but he definitely makes his displeasure known.

He loves his play room in the new house, and I don't think he has missed the stairs.  He definitely loves having Nemo around.  He gets right down to Nemo's level and says (in a very loud voice), "HI, NEMO!"  Maybe he thinks if he says it loudly enough, Nemo will eventually answer him.  Every time we leave the house, Austin says (we'll be right) "Back, Nemo."  Nemo has been very good natured with all the extra attention.

Mostly, Austin loves having daddy home every night and our new horses.  Our new place (which is really Carl and Georgia's new home and is fantastic) backs up to a horse farm.  Just over our back fence is a little area where 3 miniature horses graze.  Austin is OBSESSED with the horses and dearly loves going outside to feed them carrots.  It is not unusual for the first words out of his mouth in the morning to be "horsey carrot."  He is also rather obsessed with the frog that is outside with the horses.  He and Sassy saw a frog near the fence one time on one day.  Austin fully expects that same frog to make a repeat appearance every single time we go outside.  He has continued to be disappointed.  However, he has learned that horses eat carrots while frogs eat flies.
